Thymosin Alpha-1 is a 28-amino acid peptide first isolated from calf thymus tissue by Allan L. Goldstein and colleagues at George Washington University in 1977. Goldstein's laboratory had been working with a crude thymic extract designated "thymosin fraction 5" when Thymosin Alpha-1 was separated, sequenced, and identified as the primary immunologically active component of that fraction. The compound is endogenously produced in the thymus via proteolytic cleavage of prothymosin alpha (ProTα), a 113-amino acid nuclear precursor encoded by the PTMA gene.
